Environmental Education at McNary National Wildlife Refuge

Friends of Mid-Columbia River Wildlife Refuges partners with the Mid-Columbia River NWR Complex to offer environmental education that connects people of all ages with nature in ways that foster awareness, knowledge, and a sense of wonder, and cultivate an ethic of caring for the earth.  We currently provide learning opportunities through seasonal events and special projects at McNary National Wildlife Refuge.

Shrub Steppe Learning Tools
In 2006 the Science Alive team of intermediate science teachers guided by scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) created this set of learning tools for classroom teachers.
A 3’x4’ composite landscape poster is the heart of the set, accompanied by a set of flora & fauna species cards.
Rationale and guidelines are included, though any part of the materials can be used in various ways in different settings. No copyright infringements here: we want these materials to work. A poster on the wall, a reduced image for the science notebook, and a set of cards on a ring make useful reference points for study and discussion.
These files have been available online for public use until recently. Team Artist Jenny Rieke brings them to the Friends website in order for people of all ages to continue learning about our local ecosystem.
